A national community has sprung up around the idea of creating opportunities for older adults to start new careers–paid or volunteer–that allow them to make a positive social contribution in later life. The trend is gaining momentum and encompasses everything from transitions to non-profit sector work, volunteering and social entrepreneurship.

Civic Ventures. A national non-profit think tank focused on civic engagement of older adults, led by Marc Freedman, one of the key leaders of this movement. Among other things, Civic Ventures sponsors the Purpose Prize, an award given annually that recognizes trailblazers who have demonstrated creative and effective work tackling social problems. This year, the winners were chosen from 1,000 nominees; six winners received $100,000 prizes, with another nine recipients getting $10,000 awards.

Encore Careers is the online community of the Encore campaign sponsored by Civic Ventures. It’s a free online network providing news, resources and connections for individuals and organizations.

Experience Corps recruits adults over age 55 to mentor and tutor elementary students, with a focus on developing reading skills.

Idealist.org offers job postings in a wide array of non-profit jobs and volunteer opportunities all over the world.
