The new federal subsidy of COBRA health insurance premiums for some laid off workers has provoked a great deal of confusion–at least in the short-term–among people trying to figure out if they qualify for the benefits. Many have left comments and questions here at RetirementRevised, and while we’d love to help, we’re not capable of providing one-on-one advice.

However, we have been digging around looking for reliable sources of help, and have identified two:

–The U.S. Department of Labor has been posting information on its website about the COBRA subsidy. Perhaps more important, I’m told that DOL’s benefit advisors are now prepared to answer questions (no charge). Call the hotline at 866.444.3272.

–Families USA, a non-profit healthcare advocacy group, has posted a page with detailed information about the subsidy.

My wife had a medical leave of absence with wall-mart,medical leave was for 12 mo.and we paid her premium through this 12 mo. She has used up the 12 mo. leave and now automatic termanation because she is under a docors car and can not work.
We can not afford the cost of $425.00 per mo.for cobra to continue the coverage so she can get the same insurance coverage that she had.Her age is 61 years.also she is on ss disability now.

My last day as an employee of Fluor Corp. was Jan. 24, 2009. First day of COBRA eligibility was Jan. 25, 2009. COBRA insurance has been filed and approval has been received for COBRA insurance and federal COBRA stimulus. Payment coupons have been received showing 100% payment required for Jan. 25 - Feb. 28, 2009 With 65% COBRA susidy beginning March 01, 2009. Is the information I received correct or should COBRA subsidy begin January 25, 2009 which is my first day of COBRA eligibility?

Im very glad to hear that someone is looking after us in washington concerning the cobra extension. If cobra is extended to 24 months it would be a welcome blessing if the matching coverage would be extended to 24 months also. Perhaps money to fund this much needed coverage could come from reducing our atomic stockpile from destroying our world from 100 times over to only 30 times over.
