The Metlife Mature Marketing Institute just published “Buddy, Can You Spare a Job,” a new report on the challenges aging baby boomers face in the employment market. It’s an in-depth examination of boomers’ motivations to work longer and the workplace obstacles to employment. Most important, the report is packed with excellent advice for people trying to navigate treacherous midlife career transitions.

The report–which is free and can be downloaded without registering at the Metlife site–was written by Dr. David DeLong, author of Lost Knowledge: Confronting the Threat of an Aging Workforce and a research fellow at the MIT AgeLab. It’s based on three data sources:

-Interviews with executive coaches, job counselors, and others who are experts in working with older job seekers

-Interviews with job seekers

-A survey of 1,242 U.S. residents, ages 55 to 70.

I’ll have more to say about the study in an upcoming column, but this is recommended reading for anyone middle-age and beyond facing challenges with employment and job hunting strategy. Download the report here [pdf file].
