As baby boomers start to retire in greater numbers, companies with large staffs of scientists and engineers are getting worried. That’s because there aren’t enough replacements coming up behind them. So, the boomer-driven brain drain you hear so much about about is especially acute in the R&D arena. Several thousand of these retirees are finding second careers as part-time consultants under the umbrella of YourEncore, an Indianapolis company that connects corporations with retired scientists and engineers to leverage their expertise.

But don’t call YourEncore an employment agency or consulting firm. “We’re an innovation services company,” says Brad Lawson, president and CEO. “We recover lost knowledge from the retirees walking out the door at growing rate every day…and we make remarkable connections with people with expertise across a range of industries.”

I’ll be writing about YourEncore in the column in January, and innovation in second careers will be an ongoing theme for Retire Smart and RetirementRevised. I welcome your thoughts and stories on this topic; drop me a note here.
